5/31/2023 0 Comments The bfg story![]() It is an expansion of a short story from Dahls 1975 book Danny, the Champion of the World. It's too bad the end took to long to come for me. The BFG (short for The Big Friendly Giant) is a 1982 childrens book written by British novelist Roald Dahl and illustrated by Quentin Blake. Sophie is so astonished and feels so bad for the children being eaten that her and the BFG come up with a plan to get the queens help. There are nine other giants who eat children every night (therefore younger children should not have this read to them) in various different countries. This is cute at the beginning but gets old fast. (He catches bad dreams too, and stores them but never uses them) He talks backwards alot - instead or saying right or wrong he says right or left and his words are jumbled wrong most of the time. He catches these dreams with a net and stores them in glass jars. The BFG takes her to his cave and teaches her that he is friendly and collects good dreams to blow into little children's bedrooms at night. ![]() The BFG is a big friendly giant who kidnaps orphan Sophie when she sees him late one night. I really enjoyed the first part of this book, but after that it got repetitive and drawn out. ![]() 5/31/2023 0 Comments Taras bulba novel![]() "An understanding of Gogol’s point of view gives the key to “Taras Bulba.” For in this panoramic canvas of the Setch, the military brotherhood of the Cossacks, living under open skies, picturesquely and heroically, he has drawn a picture of his romantic ideal, which if far from perfect at any rate seemed to him preferable to the grey tedium of a city peopled with government officials. However, I also watched the trailer for that movie, so while reading I was able to picture Brynner as Taras and Tony Curtis as his son Andrii. I vaguely remembered seeing the film that starred Yul Brynner as Taras Bulba, but I learned at Wiki that the movie was very different from the story. ![]() So I went to Project Gutenberg and chose this book. I have read one title by this author and remembered that I had intended to read more some day. I came across the name Gogol a few weeks ago while reading a book about Ukraine. I will come back someday and finish the book properly, so this review is only for Taras Bulba, not for the entire book. But I am not in the mood for the rest of them. ![]() ![]() I have finished Tara Bulba, the first of six stories in this collection by Nikolai Gogol. ![]() 5/31/2023 0 Comments Plantzilla by Jerdine Nolen![]() ![]() ![]() |a In a series of letters a boy, his science teacher, and his parents discuss the progress of a very unusual, sometimes frightening, plant that becomes more human as the summer progresses. |a 1 volume (unpaged) : |b color illustrations |c 24 x 28 cm |a Plantzilla / |c Jerdine Nolen illustrated by David Catrow. ![]() |
